“Upon reflection of prayer, and in discussion with Heather, I’ve decided to retire from the National Football League,” Carr said. “For more than 11 years, we have been incredibly blessed, and we are forever grateful and humbled by this experience. According to the Saints, as Carr was preparing for the 2025 season, he began to experience pain in his right shoulder in late March. The team said that this was the first time that he had been throwing a football since suffering a concussion and left-hand injury on December 8th, 2024.

After contacting the Saints medical staff and undergoing scans, it was revealed that Carr had a labral tear and had ‘significant degenerative changes to his rotator cuff.’

Following that revelation, a plan was made for the best steps forward. The team said that surgery was an option, which would have meant he would likely miss a good part of the 2025 season.

However, with surgery, there was no guarantee that he would have the same strength and his performance may be lesser than before the injury.

Carr decided to step away after talking it over with his wife Heather and the team.
